ANC 2A Announces Special June 2016 Meeting

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2A will be holding a special meeting on Saturday, June 25th at 11:00 am in the community room of the West End Interim Library, 2522 Virginia Avenue NW. The ANC will be discussing DC Council Bill B21-0697 – the “Advisory Neighborhood Commissions Omnibus Amendment Act of 2016”, as well as the “New Columbia Draft Constitution” as it pertains to Advisory Neighborhood Commissions.

The Advisory Neighborhood Commissions Omnibus Amendment Act of 2016 was introduced by Councilmember Anita Bonds in April of 2016, and is currently being considered by the DC Council’s Committee on Housing and Community Development. The proposed bill would significantly reform the ways in which Advisory Neighborhood Commissions operate. The full text of the bill can be found here.

The New Columbia Draft Constitution was recently proposed by the New Columbia Statehood Commission, which is chaired by Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson. The proposed constitution would serve as the state constitution once the State of New Columbia becomes the Nation’s 51st state. The constitution also proposes major reforms in the ways in which Advisory Neighborhood Commissions operate. The full text of the constitution can be found here. Additionally, more information on the New Columbia Statehood Commission’s efforts can be found here.

ANC 2A hopes that this special meeting will provide much needed time for the ANC and the community to discuss both pieces of proposed legislation. The ANC encourages the community to come to the special meeting prepared with questions and suggestions regarding both matters.
