ANC 2A Executive Director Job Opening

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2A is seeking an Executive Director. This is a part-time (contract) position supporting a nine-member elected body that represents the Foggy Bottom and West End communities. 

The Executive Director serves as the primary administrative liaison between the Commission and its government partners, and plays a critical role in the Commission’s day-to-day operations. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend every regular meeting (one per month) and special meeting (as necessary) of the Commission.
  • Manage the Commission’s primary email inbox, which involves responding to and/or re-routing correspondence on a daily basis.
  • Draft, in consultation with the Chairperson, the Commission’s monthly meeting agenda.
  • Draft public meeting notices and ensure they are properly distributed in accordance with D.C. law and ANC2A’s by-laws and practices.
  • Provide Commissioners, presenters and the public (in a timely manner) with all information necessary to participate in meetings.
  • Set up and break down the Commission’s hybrid meeting kit (i.e., audio and video tech) as needed for meetings. 
  • Serve as the tech and operations lead for all meetings, which includes (among other tasks) setting up and overseeing the Zoom meeting and troubleshooting any tech problems that may arise.
  • Take accurate notes during meetings, and draft, in consultation with the Secretary, the official minutes from those meetings. 
  • Ensure that a recording of each meeting is made available in accordance with D.C. law. 
  • Format resolutions prior to meetings, and ensure their on-time submission to relevant agency contacts upon passage by the Commission. 
  • Maintain the Commission’s office supplies. 
  • Keep the Commission’s financial records, prepare checks for authorized signatures, pay bills and other expenses, prepare quarterly and annual financial reports, and prepare an annual draft budget.
  • Maintain and update the Commission’s website to ensure it contains accurate and timely information, including meeting notices and documents.
  • Prepare and submit employment tax forms. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate is detail oriented, highly organized and committed to excellence in public service. There are no formal educational or professional requirements for this position, and we strongly encourage candidates from a diverse range of personal and professional backgrounds to apply. 

Some of the characteristics we look for in an Executive Director include: 

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and a commitment to consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Fluency with software tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, WordPress and others.
  • The ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with Commissioners, other elected officials, stakeholders and constituents across a broad range of political and ideological viewpoints. 

The most competitive candidates may demonstrate one or more of the following: 

  • Above-average technical proficiency and the ability to quickly adapt to new software and hardware.
  • Experience preparing financial reports and managing a budget.
  • Knowledge of the structure of D.C. government, especially laws and structures relevant to good governance practices.
  • Experience organizing and executing hybrid meetings, especially in a government setting.

COMPENSATION AND HOW TO APPLY:

The ANC 2A Executive Director is an independent contractor and is not eligible for employment benefits through the District of Columbia.

The position requires an average of 40 hours per month and pays $1,500 per month. Additional hours and compensation may be required, and will be authorized by the Commission on a case-by-case basis.
